Lovingly we Learn in Harmony

We are Mathematicians

Maths is taught through a mastery approach, using the ‘White Rose’ scheme of work from Reception to Year 6.Maths Mastery is a highly effective approach to teaching maths, based on reliable research and evidence. It builds students' mathematical fluency without the need for rote learning and supports pupils in learning to think mathematically, as opposed to reciting formulas they don't understand.We use White Rose Maths to deliver our Maths Mastery curriculum.

This is a highly validated mastery approach to learning and comes with fantastic resources which are able to be shared online.This child-centered approach is then enhanced through challenges from a range of high-quality sources, including power maths, fluency bee and TA Hub.  Within Maths lessons, we use White Rose teaching tools, worksheets and support with Power Maths workbooks for year 1 to 6.Learning is embedded through a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. Our White Rose Maths curriculum systematically builds mathematical knowledge and skills.

This means that our children can understand and draw on the knowledge, concepts and procedures they have already learned, and apply these to where they are now in their learning, as well as in the next stage. Alongside White Rose Maths, we incorporate mathematical reasoning and problem solving  to solve practical problems in everyday life.

Here at St Mary's, we aim to develop a love and curiosity of numbers and maths for EYFS children. We use very practical activities to inspire and engage the children and often take our work outside. Numbers need to be real and meaningful to young children, so it's important to show them numbers in context. Children need real-life maths experiences and the chance to repeat them often. This is how they remember them . Use mathematical words to support children's mathematical thinking.

Maths is one of the four specific areas within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Each specific area is divided into Early Learning Goals, for maths these are:

  • Number

Children at the expected level of development will:

  • Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number;
  • Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5;
  • Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts.
  • Numerical Patterns

Children at the expected level of development will:

  • Verbally count beyond 20, recognising the pattern of the counting system;
  • Compare quantities up to 10 in different contexts, recognising when one quantity is greater than, less than or the same as the other quantity;
  • Explore and represent patterns within numbers up to 10, including evens and odds, double facts and how quantities can be distributed equally.

At St Mary's, we use the White Rose Scheme of work to deliver the EYFS  Maths curriculum. Maths is taught through a numbers of approaches such as circle times, singing nursery rhymes, reading Maths themed stories and number books and adult-led activities. Maths is also embeded into the continuous provision where children can explore and extend their Maths learning through meaningful play with their peers and adults.
