Sports Premium Funding

The Background

In April 2013, the Government announced new funding of £150 million for physical education (PE) and sport. This funding should be used to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to schools to be spent on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.

This funding is ring-fenced and we will be held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils progress and participation in PE and school sport.

How did Our Lady’s utilise the Sports Premium funding in 2014/15 and 2015/16?

All children benefited regardless of sporting ability.

All children have been given the opportunity to compete with other schools.

Qualified sports coaches worked alongside staff for short PE modules eg cricket, golf, gymnastics and tennis to provide the professional development of staff at our school so they could be best equipped to teach high quality Physical Education and school sport for years to come.

We work in partnership with local primary schools and Dowdales School and throughout 2015 Our Lady’s have employed (through Dowdales) an experienced P.E. teacher to work alongside with our Sports Coordinator.

Encouraged our children to improve their leadership skills through sport such as the play leader initiative.

Began to develop intra and inter school competitions.

Some additional equipment has been purchased in order to improve the quality of curriculum and extra-curriculum activities.

Impact of £8,865 Sports Premium Funding 2015/16

Staff have developed an increase in expertise to deliver all areas of the PE curriculum.  The school now  has sustainable,  high quality PE provision, ensuring a lasting legacy of consistently good teaching of PE.

Pupil achievement in PE has increased.  This has been  due to Staff professional development, which has been  delivered by a Specialist Sports Leader, in pupil assessment

Pupils have experienced the opportunities to participate in a greater variety of sporting activities -e.g.  Dance; Athletics; Dance; Cricket.  This has led to improved engagement and enjoyment from pupils.

There has been an increase in pupil participation in extra curriculum activities- from 46% in 2014/15 to 78% in 2015/16.  (Pupil Survey).

Greater involvement in community sporting events and Small School Partnership opportunities.  This has enabled pupils to network with their peers from other schools and gain experience of  different sporting competition and the importance of fair play.

Greater emphasis on Sport has led to a clearer understanding for pupils of the importance of healthy eating and striving for a healthy lifestyle. (Pupil discussions during School Council meetings)

How will Our Lady’s utilise the £8,000 Sports Premium funding in 2016/17 academic year?

We will continue to ensure high quality teaching and learning in PE throughout the school is taking place. A new high quality scheme of work will be introduced for staff to trial and, if successful, the school will invest in it using Sports Premium money.

We will complete repeated equipment audit to ensure school has equipment for quality teaching and learning.

Continue to provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities for all children in school regardless of their abilities.

Continue developing intra and inter school sports competitions and provide opportunities for all children to compete.

Ensure that close links with local sports clubs are made and some children from school take up sports in those clubs.

The impact of all development priorities will be recorded and shared on the School website.
